What Are Those Blue Eye Beads? The Meaning of the Nazar

If you've ever seen a bright blue bead with a white and black eye in the center, maybe hanging from a keychain, jewelry, or even over a doorway, you’ve seen a nazar, also known as an evil eye bead.

These eye-shaped talismans are traditionally used to protect against the evil eye, a curse believed to be caused by envy, jealousy, or ill will. The belief in the evil eye exists across many cultures, especially in the Mediterranean, Middle East, and parts of Asia and Latin America.

The nazar works as a kind of spiritual shield. The idea is that the bead “reflects” the negative energy back to its source, keeping the wearer or the space safe and energetically clear.

Why is it blue? The deep cobalt blue color is believed to have protective qualities and was also a common color in glasswork in places like Turkey and Greece, where these talismans are especially popular.

Ways to Use a Nazar:

  • Wear it as jewelry (bracelets, necklaces, earrings)

  • Hang one near your front door or in your car for protection

  • Carry a small one in your bag or pocket for daily shielding

  • Place one on your altar or in your home for energy cleansing

Whether you see it as a symbol of protection, a cultural tradition, or just love the look of it, the nazar carries centuries of history and meaning. It’s a simple yet powerful way to guard against negative intentions and honor tradition.

Stay protected, and may only good energy come your way!
